Bushmeat

Bushmeat is the name given to wildlife that is hunted by people for food.

Popular bushmeat includes gorillas, chimpanzees, elephants, monkeys, antelope, crocodiles, snakes and many others.

Many of these animals are endangered, making it illegal to hunt them.

In Central and West Africa between 3 - 5 million tonnes of bushmeat are killed each year

the problem

  • Africa's rising population means that there is an ever increasing demand for food.
  • Improved transport systems have led to large urban bushmeat markets.
  • The sophistication and availability of hunting weapons has increased.
  • There is a growing international trade in bushmeat, making exporting viable.
  • In some parts of Africa, bushmeat is 75% cheaper than domestic meat.

the solution

  • Wildlife management schemes must be put into place in affected areas.
  • Alternative food sources must be found through better farming methods.
  • Cameroon's unique wildlife should be used to attract foreign visitors.
  • Alternative employment must be found for hunters.
  • If nothing is done, in 10-15 years Cameroon will have no wild apes.
